Bio

Dr. Arielle Baskin-Sommers is a Professor of Psychology and a licensed clinical psychologist at Yale University. Her research examines the cognitive, emotional, and environmental mechanisms that give rise to antisocial behavior. She investigates these mechanisms across a diverse range of individuals, including those with substance use disorders, psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, and those who frequently engage in high-risk behaviors. A central premise of Dr. Baskin-Sommers’s work is that focusing solely on observable behavior can obscure meaningful differences in its underlying causes. By identifying the specific mechanisms that drive particular behavioral patterns, her research aims to advance more precise conceptualizations, and ultimately more effective interventions, for antisocial behavior. Dr. Baskin-Sommers has published more than 140 articles in leading scientific journals, including Biological Psychiatry, PNAS, Nature journals, and Psychological Science. She has been recognized with numerous honors, such as Early Career Awards from both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Baskin-Sommers frequently engages with media outlets, community groups, and national and international organizations seeking more humane and scientifically grounded approaches to mental health and criminal justice.
