Book smarts get people into the room. Emotional intelligence decides what happens once they are in it. The ability to recognize what you are feeling, manage it before it manages you, read what other people are feeling, and influence that without manipulation is the difference between a technically capable person and an effective one. Unlike cognitive ability, emotional intelligence (EQ) can be measured, practiced, and raised over time, and how to improve emotional intelligence is what this course sets out to teach.

Courses for Dummies is the collection of For Dummies courses on Coursera. It brings the Dummies approach of making complex concepts easy to understand into course form, with short lessons and hands-on practice. Emotional Intelligence For Dummies is one course in the collection, and you can browse the rest on the Courses for Dummies page.
Emotional Intelligence For Dummies is an emotional intelligence course that shows you how to improve emotional intelligence in practice. You learn what emotional intelligence is, how it is measured, and how it differs from personality and cognitive ability. You then build emotional self-awareness, emotional self-management, empathy, and the management of other people’s emotions, and apply them to workplace pressure, career decisions, leadership, workplace climate, study, relationships, and parenting. By the end, you will be able to name what you are feeling in the moment, choose your response, and read and shift the emotional state of the people around you.
For 35 years, Dummies has made complex topics easy to understand, and these courses are built around practice. Each lesson opens with two topic videos of about five minutes each, followed immediately by applied practice, and you learn at your own pace. The course ends with a four-week plan for developing emotional intelligence: you identify your two largest emotional intelligence gaps, analyze real emotional episodes, and build a plan around specific techniques, observable behavior changes, and measurable progress.
This emotional intelligence course is for people who are managing a team, navigating a difficult colleague, holding a relationship together, or raising a child. It is listed at beginner level, with experience recommended, and it starts with the basics: what emotional intelligence is, how it is assessed, and how it differs from personality and cognitive ability. Module 4 covers emotional intelligence in the workplace, including leadership, and Module 5 takes it beyond the office into relationships and parenting. The wider Courses for Dummies collection also includes leadership, communication skills, coaching and mentoring, and conflict resolution courses.
After you enroll, begin with Module 1, "Introduction to the Entire Course," which takes about an hour. It has a short welcome video, readings on how to use the course, and a 20-minute Pre-Course Diagnostic: Emotional Intelligence Readiness Self-Assessment. The diagnostic highlights your strengths and development needs across self-awareness, self-management, empathy, managing others, and applying emotional quotient (EQ) at work and at home, and it doesn't restrict access to any module. From there, work through Modules 2 to 5, then finish with Module 6's project, a four-week emotional intelligence development plan.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and manage your own emotions, understand what others are feeling, and influence emotional interactions constructively. An emotionally intelligent person notices what they feel, chooses how to respond instead of simply reacting, reads what other people are feeling, and influences interactions without manipulating anyone. It differs from personality and from cognitive ability, and it can be developed with practice. Emotional Intelligence For Dummies teaches it in these terms, and Module 2 covers how emotionally intelligent people feel, think, and behave.
There is no single standard list of signs, and sources give different numbers. This course doesn't teach a fixed seven. Module 2 explores how emotionally intelligent people feel, think, and behave, and it includes a self-assessment checklist, "The Emotionally Intelligent Person," so you can see where you stand.
Neither is more valuable in every situation, because they measure different things. IQ reflects cognitive ability, such as reasoning and problem-solving, and EQ reflects how well you recognize and manage emotions, your own and other people’s. Cognitive ability often opens doors, and emotional intelligence tends to shape how you work with the people once you’re through them. Emotional Intelligence For Dummies frames it that way: book smarts get people into the room, and emotional intelligence decides what happens once they are in it. Module 2 covers how EQ differs from personality and cognitive ability.
The course teaches how EQ is measured, though it doesn’t administer a formal, scored EQ test. Module 2 includes a reading on EQ tests, personality tests, and what each one measures, plus a self-assessment checklist and a baseline activity. Module 1’s diagnostic highlights your strengths and development needs.
Emotional intelligence can be improved with practice. A useful approach is to build it in sequence: notice what you are feeling, learn to manage it, develop empathy for what others are feeling, and then learn to influence those interactions constructively. Reflecting on real situations helps, such as keeping an emotion log and noting how you reacted and what you could try differently. Emotional Intelligence For Dummies follows this sequence in Module 3, and it ends with a four-week plan for developing emotional intelligence, built around specific techniques and measurable progress.
You can’t always control what you feel, but you can learn to manage how you respond. A few widely used approaches are to name the emotion, separate what happened from the story you tell yourself about it, reframe the thought behind it, and use relaxation, mindfulness, or a short distraction to settle before you act. Emotional Intelligence For Dummies teaches these in Module 3, which covers telling feelings, emotions, and moods apart, the ABCDE method, and cognitive restructuring, and it includes an activity called “The Emotion Log and Reframe.” If your emotions feel unmanageable, a qualified professional can help.
